Scar Laser Aftercare: What to Skip for 2 Weeks

Makeup goes back on once your skin has closed, usually about a week after fractional laser. Workouts, saunas, and alcohol wait about 2 weeks, and strong sun 6 to 8 weeks. Here's each recovery stage and when to call.

You can wear makeup again once your skin has fully closed and your doctor says it's okay, which usually takes about a week after fractional laser. Hold off on anything that makes your face flush, like hard workouts, saunas, and drinking, for about 2 weeks. Then keep your new skin out of strong daytime sun for 6 to 8 weeks.

Feeling fine doesn't mean your skin is ready. The surface can look calm while the new skin underneath is still thin and easily darkened by sunlight. In this article, we'll cover each stage of recovery, the reactions that pass on their own, and how to decide when your next session should be.

Quick Summary

  • Wait until your skin has closed to wear makeup, about 2 weeks for activities that flush your face, and 6 to 8 weeks before long stretches in the sun.
  • Healing time: fractional laser skin usually closes in about a week, and it dries and peels around days 5 to 7.
  • Leave scabs and peeling skin alone. Pulling them off can lead to infection or a new scar.
  • Sessions: acne scars rarely improve enough after one treatment, and 3 or more sessions may be needed.

How Should You Wash Your Face in the First Week After Scar Laser?

Wash gently and keep a thin protective layer on your skin until it closes. Right after treatment, your face may feel hot and look red, much like a sunburn. Redness, swelling, itching, and stinging can last a few days.

Fractional laser: a laser that treats tiny, evenly spaced dots of skin instead of the whole surface, so the untouched skin in between helps the treated spots heal faster.

For the first 24 to 48 hours, hold a cold pack wrapped in a towel against your skin for 15 minutes every 1 to 2 hours. Sleeping with an extra pillow for the first 4 days can help keep swelling down.

Wash as often as your doctor tells you, which may be anywhere from 2 to 5 times a day. Use lukewarm water and your fingertips, and pat dry instead of rubbing. Keeping the area clean lowers the chance of infection.

  • After washing, apply a thin layer of an ointment-type moisturizer, such as petroleum jelly, twice a day
  • Keep it up until the skin has fully closed, even if it starts to look better sooner
  • Around days 5 to 7, the skin dries and peels to show pink new skin, so let it come off on its own

When Can You Wear Makeup Again After Scar Laser?

Makeup can go back on once the treated skin has completely healed and your doctor has given the go-ahead. Before that, you'd be layering product over open skin. Cleveland Clinic notes that recovery takes anywhere from 5 to 21 days depending on your skin and the type of laser, and that fractional CO2 laser takes a full week.

Deeper, non-fractional CO2 resurfacing can take up to 2 weeks. If you had radiofrequency microneedling or a combination treatment, ask your doctor which timeline applies to you, because it may differ.

When you do start again, keep it simple:

  • Choose oil-free products
  • Use clean brushes or sponges
  • Remove makeup gently at night, without scrubbing

If any spot still looks raw or crusted, it isn't ready for makeup yet. Cover the rest and leave that area bare a little longer.

Workouts, Saunas, and Alcohol: Why Wait 2 Weeks?

Anything that makes your face hot and flushed is best avoided for 2 weeks after treatment. That includes sweaty workouts, saunas and hot baths, and alcohol. Smoking slows healing too, so this is a good stretch to stop.

Your skin care routine also needs a pause. Some ingredients feel harsh on freshly treated skin, and each has its own waiting period:

What to put on holdHow long to wait
Hard workouts, saunas, hot baths, alcoholAbout 2 weeks
Tretinoin and other retinoids, glycolic acidAbout 4 weeks
Other products that sting or irritateAbout 6 weeks

Retinoids: vitamin A-based skin care ingredients, such as tretinoin, that speed up how skin cells turn over.

Do You Still Need to Avoid the Sun for 6 to 8 Weeks?

Yes. Even after your skin has closed, limit time outdoors during the day for 6 to 8 weeks, including on cloudy or cool days. Treated skin can darken when it's exposed to sunlight, leaving brown marks that take weeks to fade.

Sunscreen is non-negotiable during this time. Pick one that is broad-spectrum, water-resistant, and SPF 30 or higher, and apply it 15 minutes before you go outside. A hat and shade help, but they don't replace sunscreen.

In a Thai study of 13 Asian patients with medium-brown skin who had fractional CO2 laser for acne scars, 92% developed mild brown discoloration. It cleared in all of them, on average within 5 weeks. The study was small, so it can't tell you exactly how your skin will react. Still, it shows why the pink-skin weeks are part of your recovery rather than a time to relax.

Redness tends to fade over 2 to 3 months. In some people, it lingers for 6 months to a year.

Scar Laser Side Effects: What's Normal, and When to Call?

Redness, swelling, itching, and peeling around days 5 to 7 are part of normal healing. Within the first month, tiny white bumps called milia can appear, and gentle washing usually clears them.

Milia: small, hard, white bumps that form when dead skin gets trapped just under the surface.

Some signs need attention right away. Contact the clinic that treated you without waiting if you notice:

  • Blisters, or oozing that keeps going
  • Cold sores on or around your lips
  • Pus, or warmth and pain that get worse instead of better

If the area around your mouth was treated, or you often get cold sores, tell your doctor before treatment. An antiviral medication can be started beforehand and continued for 7 to 10 days afterward. New scarring after laser treatment is very rare.

Planning Scar Laser Around a Trip to Korea?

Book the treatment early in your stay, not right before you fly home. You'll want about a week for your skin to close, and ideally a follow-up visit before you leave, so a trip shorter than that leaves little room.

A few habits from travel can work against healing:

  • Spending a public bathhouse or jjimjilbang evening in the first 2 weeks, since heat makes your face flush
  • Long sightseeing days outdoors in the 6 to 8 weeks after treatment
  • Late nights out with drinks while your skin is still closing

Plan indoor activities for the first few weeks, and pack a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat. If your skin hasn't closed by the time you leave, ask the clinic how to keep caring for it at home.

The Bottom Line: When to Book Your Next Scar Laser Session

Acne scars rarely improve enough after one treatment, and 3 or more sessions may be needed. In that same Thai study, patients had 3 sessions spaced an average of 7 weeks apart. Their scars looked better 6 months after the last treatment than they did at 1 month, so it's worth waiting a few months before judging the result.

If brown marks are still visible or the redness is still strong, there's no rush to book the next round. At Beautystone, a clinic in Seoul, the doctor checks how much redness and brown discoloration has faded before setting the next session.

Take photos of your scars in the same light and from the same angle before treatment, right after your skin closes, and before your next session. Comparing them helps you see how fast the brown marks fade and whether the scars look shallower. Before you decide, ask how many weeks apart your sessions would be and why. When you reach out to Beautystone through the consultation button on this page, include where your scars are, the date of your last laser treatment, and a recent photo of any redness or brown marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I go back to work the day after scar laser treatment?

A. If you work in an office, you usually can, but your face will look red and puffy for the first few days. Makeup isn't an option yet to cover it, so it's easier to schedule meetings with lots of people about a week later. Put on sunscreen even for your commute.

Q. Can I wear a face mask after scar laser treatment?

A. A clean mask is fine, as long as it doesn't rub against the treated skin. Change it often if it gets damp with sweat, and take it off slowly so it doesn't pull off any crusts. A mask doesn't replace sunscreen.

Q. Is there anything I should do before scar laser treatment?

A. Wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day for 4 weeks before treatment is recommended. If your skin is tanned or sunburned, the treatment may be postponed. Tell your doctor about any medication you take, especially acne medication.

Q. When can I use vitamin C or brightening serums after scar laser?

A. Products that sting or irritate are best skipped for 6 weeks after treatment. Vitamin C and brightening ingredients can sting while your skin is still sensitive. When you restart, add one product at a time and test it on a small spot first.

Q. When can I go swimming after scar laser treatment?

A. Wait until your skin has fully healed and your doctor says it's okay. While the skin is still open, pool and lake water can raise the risk of infection. Hot tubs also flush your face, so treat them like a sauna.

Q. Is it a problem if redness lasts more than a month after scar laser?

A. Not on its own. Redness after laser treatment usually fades over 2 to 3 months, and it can last 6 months or longer. If it comes with growing warmth, worsening pain, or oozing, though, get it checked right away.

Q. Can I use a lightening cream on brown spots after scar laser?

A. Lightening creams are sometimes prescribed for this discoloration, but they can sting before your skin has healed. Protect your skin from the sun first, and start a cream only after a doctor has looked at the spots. Results differ from person to person.

Q. Can I use a scrub on flaky skin after scar laser treatment?

A. No. Skip scrubs and exfoliating pads while your skin is peeling. Pulling or rubbing off flakes can lead to infection or scarring, so keep moisturizing and let them fall off on their own.
