Just one Duoderm patch over a popped pimple can visibly reduce redness and help your skin recover faster

Ointment After Popping a Pimple? Duoderm Actually Works Better
Every time the seasons change, my clinic fills up with patients sporting angry red marks along their jawline and forehead.
"Doctor, I couldn't resist and popped it last night —
what if it scars?"
I hear this more often than you'd think.
Today, I want to walk you through exactly what to do after the fact.

Ointment vs. Duoderm: There's One Key Difference When It Comes to Post-Acne Marks
Duoderm is a hydrocolloid dressing that absorbs exudate from a wound
and creates a moist, healing environment.
Unlike an ointment, which simply coats the surface with a thin film,
Duoderm actively absorbs exudate
while simultaneously blocking external bacteria —
and that's what makes all the difference.
The Real Reason Duoderm Helps Prevent Red Marks After Acne
"Applying a Duoderm patch over a popped pimple absorbs exudate,
prevents secondary infection, and allows the skin to recover
without leaving behind a red mark."
— Dr. Wi Young-jin (Seoul Beautystone Clinic)
Applying a Duoderm patch over a popped pimple
absorbs exudate and prevents secondary infection,
allowing your skin to recover without a red mark.
Last month, a woman in her mid-twenties came in after squeezing four inflammatory pimples on her chin by hand and leaving them untreated.
Two of the spots had been covered with a Duoderm patch immediately after popping,
while the other two were left alone.
Ten days later,
the areas covered with Duoderm were barely visible,
while the untreated spots had developed dark, reddish post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that was clearly noticeable.
Here's where people tend to get it wrong —
many believe that "a scab means it's healing,"
but in reality, the opposite is true.

And here's the important part.
When a scab forms, inflammation continues to progress underneath,
stimulating melanocytes in the dermis.
This is precisely how PIH —
post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — develops.
Duoderm is a thin patch, roughly 1mm thick,
that maintains a moist environment on the wound surface for 24 hours,
preventing scab formation altogether.
No scab means no prolonged inflammation,
and the likelihood of hyperpigmentation drops significantly.

Dr. Wi Young-jin's Key Takeaway
After popping a pimple,
the goal isn't to let it dry out and form a scab —
it's to keep it covered and moist.
One Duoderm patch does more to prevent hyperpigmentation
than a full week of ointment.
When Duoderm Is the Right Call — and When It Isn't
To be honest,
it's not something I recommend for every single pimple.
It really does depend on the situation,
but here's how I generally break it down.
That said, it's not always the right answer.
Forcing a patch onto a dry pimple with no exudate means it won't adhere properly,
and may actually cause the surrounding skin to become macerated.
However, if it's right after popping or there's pus present,
it remains the most affordable and reliable option available.

Duoderm for Acne: The Three Questions I Hear Most in the Clinic
Q1. How long should I keep the patch on?
A. When the patch turns white and puffy,
that's your sign it has fully absorbed the exudate.
You can typically replace it after 12 to 24 hours,
and if there's a lot of exudate, changing it twice a day is perfectly fine.
If it hasn't turned white, there's no need to remove it yet.
Q2. Can I apply makeup over a Duoderm patch?
A. If you're using the thin version (Extra Thin),
applying foundation or concealer over it is generally unnoticeable.
The thicker version, however, tends to create a visible edge,
so realistically, it's better worn only at night.
Pricing ranges from about 5,000 to 10,000 KRW per pack,
making it a very accessible option.
Q3. The skin around the patch got redder after I applied it. Is that okay?
A. In rare cases, some people develop contact dermatitis
in response to the hydrocolloid material.
If you notice redness spreading along the edges of the patch
or experience itching, remove it immediately.
If it doesn't settle down within two days,
it's best to come in and have it evaluated.
Acne scars are far harder to address once they've set in. One patch right after popping is the simplest and most cost-effective step you can take.
