Late 30s Considering Filler for the First Time: Why Juvederm Can Be Confusing

Please check before reading
Q. Isn't Juvederm just one type of product?
A. No. There are separate lineups like Voluma, Volbella, and Volift, and different ones should be used depending on the area.
Q. Why do the same Juvederm products produce different results?
A. Each formulation has different particle sizes and firmness, so using the wrong one for an area can cause clumping or quick dissolution.

They may look similar, but the key differences are distinct
Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid filler brand
manufactured by Allergan (now AbbVie) in the United States.
When people commonly say "getting filler,"
names like Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero
are all hyaluronic acid-based products.
What distinguishes Juvederm from other brands is
the Vycross cross-linking technology.
Simply put, it's a technology that
weaves hyaluronic acid molecules more densely to extend longevity.
Why do some people experience less effective results even with Juvederm?
Key points of this article
Juvederm is Allergan's hyaluronic acid filler with area-specific lineups including Voluma, Volbella, and Volift.
Choosing different formulations based on the area and purpose is the key to achieving natural results.
Key Point
Juvederm is not just one product.
There are separate lineups like Voluma, Volbella, and Volift
for different areas,
and selecting the right formulation for the purpose
is everything for achieving natural results.
Last month, a woman in her early 40s visited us.
She had received Juvederm in her aegyo-sal at another clinic,
but complained of lumps that could be felt and strange clumping when smiling.
Looking at her chart, Voluma had been used.
Voluma has a high G prime (firmness index),
so it's used for filling volume in deep layers like cheekbones or chin,
but when placed under the thin aegyo-sal skin,
it naturally becomes visible.

Looking at the Juvederm lineup briefly,
Voluma is the firmest,
used for deep layer volume right above the bone,
like cheekbones and chin tip.
Volift has medium firmness
and goes into medium depths like
nasolabial folds or marionette lines.
Volbella has the smallest particles and is the softest,
used for thin and delicate areas like
lips, aegyo-sal, and under-eyes.
In terms of particle size, Volbella is the smallest
and Voluma is the largest.
Honestly, understanding just this one concept
will eliminate most confusion
when receiving filler consultations.

Dr. Wi Young-jin's Key Summary
Not all Juvederm products are the same.
What's used for cheekbones and what's used under the eyes
are distinctly different products.
Rather than saying "I got Juvederm,"
you must confirm "which line was used where and how much."
This is how I categorize them in my practice
Although it varies by case,
I usually organize and explain it this way.
But this isn't always advantageous.
While Juvederm Vycross series
has the advantage of long-lasting results,
delayed-onset swelling (delayed nodules)
is occasionally reported.
Though rare, it can appear after
immune responses like colds, vaccinations, or dental treatments,
so I always explain this aspect before procedures.
Still, when the appropriate formulation
is placed in the correct layer with the right amount,
it remains one of the most proven choices.

The three most frequently asked questions in my practice
Q1. I got Juvederm at another clinic but can feel lumps. Should I dissolve them?
A. If the palpable lumps are painless
and becoming more natural over time,
dissolution isn't necessarily required.
However, if the clumping remains the same
or the surface is uneven after more than 3 months,
partial correction with hyaluronidase (dissolving injection)
would be better.
Q2. What should I expect for Juvederm duration and cost?
A. It varies by formulation.
Firm lines like Voluma
average about 12-18 months,
while delicate lines like Volbella
last about 9-12 months.
Costs vary significantly by area and volume,
and there's variation between clinics per 1cc,
so it's most accurate to confirm directly during consultation.
Q3. Is there anything to avoid after the procedure?
A. On the day of treatment, avoid intense exercise, sauna, and alcohol,
and don't massage the treated area excessively.
For at least 2 weeks,
it's safer to postpone heat treatments
like radiofrequency or ultrasound.
The filler components can be altered by heat.
