Botox Price: How Many Units per Area (20–40)?

Botox quotes written in cc or as a flat session price can't be lined up side by side. Here's how many units each area takes on the US label, where jaw doses land in studies, and what a quote should list before you compare.

A Botox quote only compares fairly when it lists units per area, not cc. On the US label for BOTOX Cosmetic, frown lines take 20 units, crow's feet take 24 units across both sides, and forehead lines take 40 units when they're treated together with frown lines. The same 1 mL can hold a different number of units depending on how much saline was used to dissolve the drug, so quotes written only in cc or as a flat price per session can't be lined up side by side.

That's why two quotes with similar totals can mean very different doses. In this article, we'll cover what to ask when a quote lists only cc, how many units each area takes, where jaw (masseter) doses land in research, which reactions pass and which need care right away, what a fair quote should list and how to fit a session within your travel itinerary.

Quick summary

  • Compare Botox quotes only when each one lists the product and the units for every area.
  • US label doses: 20 units for frown lines, 24 for crow's feet on both sides and 40 for the forehead plus frown lines.
  • For the jaw, 48 to 72 units across both sides came out as the suitable range in a study of 90 people.
  • If the products differ, don't compare their unit numbers directly.

Botox Quote in cc Only: What Should You Ask?

Ask how many units go into each area. Botox comes as a powder that's dissolved in saline before it's injected. Following the US label, adding 2.5 mL to a 100-unit vial gives 4 units in every 0.1 mL, which works out to 40 units per mL. Add more saline, and that same 1 mL holds fewer units.

So a line like "jaw 1cc" or "forehead 0.5cc" doesn't tell you how much of the drug you're actually getting. A flat price per session has a similar gap: it may cover one area or three, and the quote won't say unless you ask.

Fortunately, the fix is simple. Ask each clinic to write down the units for every area along with the product name. Once both are on paper, you can set two quotes against the same yardstick instead of guessing from a total.

How Many Botox Units for the Forehead, Frown Lines and Crow's Feet?

Frown lines between the brows (the glabella) take 20 units: 4 units at each of 5 injection points. Crow's feet take 24 units across both sides, spread over 3 points on each side*.

*Based on the US FDA-approved label for BOTOX Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA).

Forehead lines work a little differently. To lower the chance of your brows dropping, the forehead is meant to be treated together with the frown lines: 20 units for the forehead plus 20 for the glabella. Here's how the three areas add up:

  • Frown lines: 20 units
  • Crow's feet, both sides: 24 units
  • Forehead together with frown lines: 40 units
  • All three areas in one session: 64 units

If a quote says only "3-area wrinkle Botox," hold it up against that 64-unit figure and ask how many units are really included. A much lower number may still suit a lighter look, but you'll want to know it before you compare prices.

When I plan wrinkle Botox, I watch your face both at rest and while you make expressions. I also check whether the muscles on the left and right move differently before I set the units for each area. Results differ from person to person, so the final number is set for your face rather than copied from a chart.

How Many Units Does Jaw (Masseter) Botox Need?

The US label has no approved dose for the jaw, so research is the closest guide. In one study, 90 people with thick jaw muscles (masseters*) were split into 5 groups: a placebo group and groups given 24, 48, 72 or 96 units across both sides of the jaw. Doses of 48 to 72 units came out as the suitable range.

*Masseter: the chewing muscle at the side of your jaw that firms up when you clench your back teeth.

The 24-unit group's muscles did shrink a little, but that dose may fall short of slimming a square jaw. At the other end, people in the 96-unit group reported discomfort when moving their jaw. Keep in mind that this study used a different botulinum toxin product (prabotulinumtoxinA), not BOTOX Cosmetic itself.

A second study of 80 people, also with another product, found that 48 units or more gave better value for the cost than the higher doses. In both, muscle thickness went down gradually over the 12 weeks after injection, so your jaw won't look slimmer overnight. How much you see depends on the size of your muscle, and if yours is especially large, ask how the dose would be set for it.

Botox Side Effects: What Passes and When to Get Help Right Away

Small bruises or swelling at the injection points and a mild headache are reactions that pass. In the label's clinical trials, 9% of people treated on the forehead had a headache. A drooping eyelid occurred in 3% after frown-line injections, and a lowered brow in 2% after forehead injections. These effects tend to wear off over a few weeks.

The signs below can appear anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks after injection. If you notice any of them, don't wait it out; get medical care right away:

  • Trouble swallowing food or water
  • Slurred speech or a change in your voice
  • Trouble breathing
  • Double vision or other changes in your sight
  • Muscle weakness in your arms, legs or elsewhere in your body

In these cases, it's better to postpone treatment:

  • You have an infection where you'd be injected
  • You've had an allergic reaction to any botulinum toxin product
  • You've been diagnosed with a neuromuscular condition that weakens your muscles

What Should a Botox Quote List So You Can Compare Fairly?

Look for the product name first. Each botulinum toxin product measures the strength of 1 unit in its own way, so units from one product can't be swapped for units of another. "Jaw 50 units" from two different products isn't the same dose.

Quote lineWhat it should sayWhat to check
ProductThe product name, such as Xeomin or CoretoxIf the products differ, don't compare units directly
Units per areaUnits for each area: frown lines, crow's feet, forehead, jawIf it shows only cc, ask for the units
Next sessionThe suggested intervalIntervals shorter than 3 months haven't been evaluated

If a line is missing, start your questions there. A quote with all three filled in lets you weigh what each area costs on the same basis, rather than reading a total that may hide a smaller dose.

Fitting Botox Within Your Travel Itinerary

Unless you've had sedation that day, there's no need to postpone your flight home after a Botox session.

It also helps to know what one visit means. Some treatments, such as fillers, change your shape the same day. Botox works more gradually: rather than changing things dramatically at once, it tends to bring you closer to how you used to look. The change keeps building after the injection, and with jaw Botox the slimming continues for weeks after you're home.

Once you're home, you can send photos through the consultation button on this page if you have questions about how things are settling. If you notice trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing, see a local doctor or go to emergency care first rather than waiting for a reply.

The Bottom Line: Compare Botox by Units and Product

Before you decide, ask how many units each clinic would use for each area and which product those units belong to. With those two answers, a cc figure or a single session price turns into something you can actually compare. Like any procedure, Botox comes with trade-offs, and the right dose depends on how your muscles move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How often do I need to get Botox again?

A. Botox for frown lines typically lasts about 3 to 4 months, based on the US label for BOTOX Cosmetic. The safety and effect of injecting more often than every 3 months haven't been evaluated, so it's safer to plan your next session once you can see the effect has worn off.

Q. How soon after Botox will I see results?

A. Botox starts to relax the muscle 1 to 2 days after injection, and the effect grows clearer over the first week. That's why it's best not to judge the result in the mirror on the day you're treated. Wait a week, then make the same expressions and look for the difference.

Q. When should I get jaw Botox again?

A. One study suggested repeating jaw Botox 12 weeks after the first injection. Jaw muscle thickness goes down gradually over those first 12 weeks, so it's too early to judge the result before then. Compare photos taken from the same angle at 12 weeks before you decide.

Q. Does repeated jaw Botox weaken the jawbone?

A. Jaw Botox showed no clinically meaningful change in jawbone density in a study that used CT scans on 123 people who had it once or twice over 1 year. They received 48, 72 or 96 units across both sides of the jaw. This study can't tell you what happens over periods longer than 1 year.

Q. Can I get Botox if I take medication?

A. If you take muscle relaxants or aminoglycoside antibiotics, tell the doctor before your Botox injection. These medicines can strengthen the effect of Botox, so you'd need closer monitoring. Also mention any other botulinum toxin product you've had recently.

Q. Does the vial size change how many Botox units are in each mL?

A. Not when the US label's dilution is followed. A 100-unit vial is dissolved in 2.5 mL and a 50-unit vial in 1.25 mL, and both give 4 units per 0.1 mL. A clinic that adds more saline will have fewer units in each mL, which is why units tell you more than volume.
