Underarm Laser Hair Removal — How Many Sessions Do You Actually Need?
With sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, most patients achieve near-permanent results after 5 or more underarm laser hair removal treatments, leaving only fine vellus hair behind. Learn the science behind follicle destruction and the optimal number of sessions.

💡 Before You Read — Quick Q&A
Q. Do I need to complete a full 10-session package
to see real results from underarm laser hair removal?
A. Not at all. For most patients, the underarm area
reaches a point where only fine vellus hair remains
after around 5 sessions.
The timing and spacing between sessions matter far more than the total number.
Q. Then why do some people say they saw no results
even after 10 sessions?
A. In most cases, the culprit is either poorly timed intervals
that don't align with the hair growth cycle,
or wavelength settings that weren't matched to the patient's skin type.
💡 Key Insight from Dr. Wi Young-jin
The underarm is one of the most commonly treated areas for Laser hair removal.
When sessions are performed at 4–6 week intervals for 5 or more rounds,
the vast majority of patients are left with only fine vellus hair
that barely grows back.

How Laser Hair Removal Actually Works
— "You Have to Catch the Follicle at the Right Moment"
This is one of the most common misconceptions I see —
laser hair removal does not work by burning the hair itself.
What it actually does is target the hair follicle
— the "factory" responsible for producing each strand of hair —
and damage it with laser-generated heat,
effectively preventing it from producing new hair.
But here's the critical detail most people overlook:
not all follicles are active at the same time.
Hair goes through three distinct phases:
Anagen (Active Growth Phase)
→ Catagen (Regression Phase)
→ Telogen (Resting Phase).
For laser hair removal to be effective,
it must target follicles during the Anagen phase.
Here's why:
Anagen-phase follicles contain the highest concentration of melanin pigment —
the dark pigment that absorbs laser energy.
Since the laser homes in on melanin to deliver its thermal energy,
follicles outside of the Anagen phase simply don't absorb enough energy
to sustain meaningful damage, even under the same laser settings.
And here's where it gets a little tricky:
at any given moment, only about 20–30% of underarm follicles
are in the Anagen phase.
The remaining 70–80% are in Catagen or Telogen,
meaning they receive little to no benefit from that particular session.
So if your first session felt like it didn't do much —
that's completely expected, and it's not a sign something went wrong.
Because the underarm follicle turnover cycle is approximately 4–6 weeks,
spacing your sessions accordingly ensures that each visit
targets a fresh wave of newly active Anagen follicles.
As this process repeats, the total number of active follicles steadily decreases,
and eventually coarse terminal hair is largely eliminated,
leaving behind only fine vellus hair.
Honestly, early in my practice I was more flexible about session intervals,
but after reviewing enough cases, I noticed a clear pattern:
patients who came in more frequently than every 4 weeks
tended to re-target the same follicles repeatedly,
effectively wasting sessions without meaningful progress.
On the flip side, letting the gap stretch to 2–3 months
risks giving previously damaged follicles enough time to partially recover.
The 4–6 week interval isn't just a general recommendation —
it's a scientifically grounded timing strategy
designed to align with your follicles' natural cycle.
👨⚕️ Dr. Wi Young-jin's Summary
For underarm laser hair removal,
maintaining a 4–6 week interval across 5 or more sessions
brings the vast majority of patients to a state
where only fine vellus hair remains and regrowth is minimal.
In most cases where patients felt the procedure "didn't work,"
the issue wasn't an insufficient number of sessions —
it was misaligned timing between sessions,
or energy settings that weren't properly calibrated
to their skin type.
Before adding more sessions, the first step is to verify
that your session intervals and wavelength settings are properly optimized.

How Many Sessions Does My Underarm Actually Need?
— A Realistic Look Based on Skin Type
Every case is different, but here's how I typically explain it to my patients.
Patients with thicker, darker hair benefit from higher melanin concentration,
which means greater laser absorption and a faster, more noticeable response.
On the other hand, patients with darker skin tones require more careful energy calibration —
pushing the output too high risks triggering a thermal reaction in the skin itself,
not just the follicle.
For these patients, we divide the energy delivery across multiple passes at a safer output level,
which can make the per-session improvement feel more gradual.
But this isn't necessarily a disadvantage.
In fact, this measured approach is far safer than aggressively pushing high energy,
which can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or thermal burns —
and it consistently produces more uniform, stable skin results in the long run.
I've seen quite a few patients come in after multiple sessions elsewhere
feeling frustrated with their lack of results,
and upon evaluation, many of them had been treated with energy settings
that were simply too low for their skin and hair type.
One important point I always make sure to communicate clearly:
laser hair removal is not the same as complete, permanent hair elimination.
The medically accurate term is "Permanent Hair Reduction."
What this means in practice is that hair is significantly reduced to vellus-like fineness
and regrowth is dramatically slowed —
but claiming that absolutely zero hair will ever return
is not an accurate or responsible medical statement.
That said, for patients who complete 5 or more properly conducted sessions,
the realistic outcome is a level of reduction
where hair removal becomes a non-issue in everyday life.
Many patients begin treatment before summer,
which is perfectly fine — just keep in mind that
UV exposure in the weeks following each session can slightly increase
the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation,
so diligent sun protection after each procedure is strongly recommended.
On the day of your session, please avoid alcohol, saunas, and intense exercise,
and keep the treated area free from irritation
for the first 1–2 days while your skin settles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Is underarm laser hair removal painful?
A. It varies from person to person.
Many patients describe the sensation as a snapping rubber band against the skin.
The underarm skin tends to be thinner and more sensitive than other areas,
so you may feel it more acutely than in other treatment zones.
At our clinic, we apply a generous amount of cooling gel before each session
and use active cooling throughout the procedure,
so most patients tell us it was "more manageable than expected."
If you have a low Pain threshold, just let us know during your consultation —
we can work together to find the most comfortable approach for you.
Q2. Do I need to shave before
my underarm laser hair removal session?
A. Yes — please shave the day before or on the day of your appointment.
If hair is left long on the surface, the laser energy gets absorbed
before it can reach the follicle beneath the skin,
significantly reducing effectiveness.
Waxing, however, should be avoided for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment —
waxing physically removes the follicle from the skin,
leaving nothing for the laser to target.
Q3. Can I receive laser hair removal
while pregnant or breastfeeding?
A. Laser hair removal is not recommended during pregnancy.
While there is currently no direct evidence that laser energy harms the fetus,
pregnancy-related hormonal changes significantly increase skin sensitivity
and elevate the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation,
which is why we advise against the procedure during this period.
If you are breastfeeding, we recommend consulting with your primary care physician
before making a decision.
